Research includes biological oceanography, marine protected areas, coastal fisheries, human use of the coast, coastal management, remote sensing and GIS applications to marine environmental monitoring.

The Blue Mountains region is threatened by climate change, development, wildfires, habitat loss and species extinction. The institute responds to these threats by sharing knowledge and developing practical solutions for a sustainable future.
